After 30 years in the creative services field designing corporate identity programs, collateral materials and websites for all sizes of clients, Molly Murrah, owner of Murrah & Company in Kirkland, Washington, has decided to try something new. "I chose watercolor because there is no other medium that moves me in the same way," Murrah says. "The way it mixes and travels on paper is often unpredictable, which also makes it exciting. It's not like oil paints, which are thick and stay wherever you put them. When you combine the movement of watercolors with the luminosity of the paper and the transparency of the paint, it's magical. Why do painters paint? Because we have to."
But that doesn't mean she has cast aside her other professional talents. Murrah, who began her career in New York working with clients such as American Express, American Airlines and Fieldcrest, says she still loves the creativity and challenges involved in her work. After relocating to Seattle, she became the lead graphic designer for Manus Direct Response Marketing. Two years later she and a partner launched Korth & Murrah in Bellevue. In 1984, Murrah decided to strike out on her own, and has never looked back.
Since then she has offered creative marketing and communications solutions for a variety of clients in Washington and elsewhere -- many of whom have been with her for more than a decade. Today, Murrah & Company handles end-to-end marketing and provides creative services to businesses seeking more affordable rates than larger competitiors.
